Seniors at Sci-Tech High School are turning ordinary jeans into personalized designs inspired by their childhood memories, interests and personalities.

Students are decorating their jeans with paint, glitter, stickers and other materials. Each design is based on a personal interest, a memory or a favorite character.

Senior jeans are a tradition that lets seniors celebrate their last year of high school. At some schools, seniors wear their jeans on the 27th of every month to represent the class of 2027. Wayside students can wear regular clothes only on Fridays, so seniors here wear theirs on Fridays instead.

Senior Helen Garzón said it is not something she wants to miss.

“I’m excited to make my senior jeans because it’s something that doesn’t happen twice in life,” Garzón said.

Garzón chose a design that connects to her childhood and her personality.

“I chose Curious George because I watched it a lot when I was little. I liked that he was curious and went on adventures because I’m curious too,” Garzón said.

Senior Rubén Castellanos also looked back at his childhood, picking Lightning McQueen from the movie “Cars.”

“I chose Lightning McQueen because I really like the movie and everything related to cars,” Castellanos said.

Senior Leylin Sánchez has not settled on a design yet.

“I don’t have anything specific that I want to draw yet. I’m just going to create my own personal design,” Sánchez said.

Castellanos is using stickers, brushes and special paint for his Lightning McQueen design. He said he is excited to finish it and wear it with his friends at school.

Garzón plans to wear her Curious George jeans next Friday and take pictures with her friends. Sánchez plans to wear hers Friday, too.
